Service Description: The Geographic Names
Information System (GNIS) is the Federal standard for geographic nomenclature.
The U.S. Geological Survey developed the GNIS for the U.S. Board on Geographic
Names, a Federal inter-agency body chartered by public law to maintain uniform
feature name usage throughout the Government and to promulgate standard names
to the public. The GNIS is the official repository of domestic geographic names
data; the official vehicle for geographic names use by all departments of the
Federal Government; and the source for applying geographic names to Federal
electronic and printed products of all types. See U.S. Board on Geographic Names for
additional information. Downloaded on March 13, 2019.
Nevada was selected for download under the "States,
Territories, Associated Ares of the United States" at U.S. Board on
Geographic Names as a text file. The text file was imported to Excel
as a pipe-delimited file and saved as an *.xlsx file. The Excel file was
imported to ArcMap using the "Excel to Table" tool. In ArcMap using
"Display XY features" on the table, the points were displayed in WGS
1984 coordinate system. A definition query was used on the Event layer to
select out "Spring" from the "Feature_Class" field. The
resulting feature class was projected to NAD83 UTM Z11N.
