Description:

The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments or reaches that make up the nation's surface water drainage system. NHD data was originally developed at 1:100,000-scale and exists at that scale for the whole country. This high-resolution NHD, generally developed at 1:24,000/1:12,000 scale, adds detail to the original 1:100,000-scale NHD. (Data for Alaska, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands was developed at high-resolution, not 1:100,000 scale.) Local resolution NHD is being developed where partners and data exist. The NHD contains reach codes for networked features, flow direction, names, and centerline representations for areal water bodies. Reaches are also defined on waterbodies and the approximate shorelines of the Great Lakes, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. The NHD also incorporates the National Spatial Data Infrastructure framework criteria established by the Federal Geographic Data Committee.

Modifications by DCNR:

Field Additions: “Hydro Category”, “Hydro Subcategory”, "Length (Miles)"

Field Modifications:

“Hydro Category”

Copied ‘FType’ subtypes to ‘HydroCat’ field: ‘CanalDitch’, ‘Connector’, ‘Creek’, ‘Pipeline’, ‘Slough’, ‘Stream’, ‘River’, ‘Underground Conduit’.

“Hydro Subcategory”

Copied and simplified ‘FCode’ subtypes to ‘HydroSubCat’ field: ‘Aqueduct’, ‘Ephemeral’, ‘General Case’, ‘Intermittent’, ‘Other River’, ‘Penstock’, ‘Perennial’, ‘Siphon’, ‘Stormwater’, ‘Underground Conduit’.

"Length (Miles)"

Used field geometry calculator to calculate river mileage for NAD 1983, Zone 11N.

Selected, merged and attributed large, named rivers:

Selected named rivers using the definition query: “GNIS_Name LIKE '%River%'”

Merged all features by name, attributed as “River” in Hydro Category field:

List of named rivers:

'Amargosa River', 'Bill Williams River', 'Bruneau River', 'Carson River', 'Colorado River', 'East Channel Marys River', 'East Fork Carson River', 'East Fork Jarbidge River', 'East Fork Marys River', 'East Fork Quinn River', 'East Walker River', 'Franklin River', 'Humboldt River', 'Jarbidge River', 'Kings River', 'Lake Fork West Owyhee River', 'Little Humboldt River', 'Little Owyhee River', 'Little Truckee River', 'Little Walker River', 'Marys River', 'Middle Fork Owyhee River', 'Moon River', 'Muddy River', 'North Fork Humboldt River', 'North Fork Little Humboldt River', 'North Fork Owyhee River', 'North Twin River', 'Owens River', 'Owyhee River', 'Quinn River', 'Reese River', 'South Branch Carson River', 'South Fork Humboldt River', 'South Fork Little Humboldt River', 'South Fork Owyhee River', 'South Fork Quinn River', 'South Fork South Twin River', 'South Twin River', 'Susan River', 'Truckee River', 'Upper Truckee River', 'Walker River', 'Virgin River', 'West Fork Carson River', 'West Fork of Old River', 'West Little Owyhee River', 'West Fork West Walker River', 'West Marys River', 'West Walker River', 'White River'.

Turned off following fields: ‘ReachCode’, 'FlowDir', ‘WBArea_Permanent_Identifier’, ‘FType’, ‘FCode’, ‘MainPath’, ‘InNetwork’, ‘VisibilityFilter’, ‘Shape_Length’.
